Day 1: Cusco - Rainbown Mountain (Vinicunca) - Cusco
Our epic adventure begins at 4:00 am, we will pick you up from the door of your accommodation to head for 3 hours towards the southern valley in our private transport, along the valley we will observe picturesque Andean towns, fertile valleys, and beautiful rolling mountains, on the way we have a stop to enjoy a delicious continental breakfast to give you the nourishing boost you need to begin the hike.
Cusco’s weather is usually quite cold, and the trailhead is even colder, so early in the morning. Be sure to bring a warm jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves.
Start of the hike
We´ll continue our journey until we reach the starting point of the walk at 4,630m/15,190 ft, there we´ll start by heading along the nice path in the middle of the Andean mountains. As you ascend, you will be rewarded with an impressive view of snow mountains, of course, the hike has some short breaks and our guide will help you to understand how the people from that area are still practicing the example of their ancestors, our guides speak Quechua so they will teach you words in our native language.
The trail itself is quite wide and helpful for those with vertigo or a fear of heights. The trek is best during the dry season as the trails are not paved. The trail can be a bit dusty, and in the rainy season, it can be slippery since it may be wet. However, with good waterproof hiking shoes and trekking poles, it will be just fine. This is your opportunity to see why Rainbow Mountain has become an Instagrammers delight according to CNBC!
Arrival at the mountain
After 1 hour and a half of walking, we´ll reach the amazing Rainbow Mountain of Cusco (5,030 m/16,502 ft), take your time to admire the astounding beauty of this impressive natural formation, you will have about 1 hour to explore the spectacular views of the surrounding areas – valleys, mountains like Ausangate Mountain (6,372m/20,905ft) take a few minutes to try to understand why this mountain is a living deity for the Andean people, use this opportunity to take some incredible photos or simply immerse yourself in the landscape, depending on how fast you hiked and the weather conditions, if you are a good hiker or you booked in a private service you can organize the extra hiking to the RED VALLEY which is 45 more minutes (round trip) from the Rainbow mountain.
Finally, we return on the same way that we used to go up, the downhill is going to be 1 hour or 45 minutes and our car is waiting for us, to go 1 more hour to the restaurant and enjoy our buffet lunch, then we´ll board our transport once again to get back to the city of Cusco.
